For the 2020/2021 season, Hawthorn Magic Club introduced a new coaching framework to continue to provide a positive environment for athletes and coaches to continue to enjoy the game, learn and challenge each other, and to have a strong focus around athlete and coach development.

The new structure will incorporate several new positions, including the first-time position of Program Coach Coordinator, Shawn King, along with several Specialist Skills Coaches, whilst embracing the roles and responsibilities of key paid administration positions. Dion Jewell continues in his role as Head of Basketball, and the Specialist Coaches include:

2 x WNBL Athletes who will be announced in early 2021

The Specialist Coaches will be on court at training, assisting coaches with skill and athlete development, observing games, sitting on team benches during VJBL games, coach development and helping implement the Magic Style of Play alongside all the Team and Age Group Head Coaches.

Shawn King

Shawn is a highly accomplished, competitive and skillful basketball player and coach whose passion lies in coaching and motivating players to excel. He has played professional basketball in Australia, China, England, France and Hong Kong. He has won 3 Big V Championships and 2 Championships in England. Shawn has coached at Dandenong (VJBL) and Chelsea (Big V). In 2016/17 Shawn coached the Magic U18.1 Boys in VC to a Preliminary Final.

For the 2020/21 season, he is the 18.1 Boys (VJBL) and Championship Men’s (Big V) Head Coach respectively.
