Day Five: The Refs and Rules

Don’t worry, if you don’t know the rules you will have wonderful referees in the form of our Big V players. But if you want to read up on them beforehand, they are all outlined below.

The “check ball” concept
Checking the ball is a method of commencing or resuming play with an exchange of the ball between the offensive and defensive teams in the take-back area. With the offensive player in the take-back area and the defensive player on the other side of the netball third, the offensive player shall pass the ball to the defensive player. The defensive player shall then pass the ball back to the offensive player. The returning of the ball by the defensive team indicates that they’re ready to go. The ball is now live and the take-back area now becomes part of the field of play.

Start of each half
The team listed first on the scoresheet will start with the ball in the first half; the team listed second on the scoresheet will start with the ball in the second half. Both halves will commence with a check ball situation.

After a made basket
The non-scoring team shall resume play with a check ball situation.

Following an offensive rebound
Play continues.

Following a defensive rebound or turnover
The ball must be taken behind the take-back area (both feet) to establish the team in its front court.

Dead-ball situations
When the ball goes out of bounds, a violation has occurred or a non-shooting foul has been called, play will resume with a check ball situation.

Jump-ball situations
In the event of a jump-ball situation, the defensive team or the non-shooting team (in the case of a rebound) will resume play with a check ball situation.

Scoring
Field goals (including those outside the 3-point line) are worth 2 points. Free throws are worth 1 point.

Shooting fouls
A player fouled in the act of shooting with the shot being unsuccessful will be awarded 1 free throw (no rebounding situation). The offensive team will resume play with a check ball situation.

A player fouled in the act of shooting with the shot being successful will be awarded the 2 points and 1 free throw (no rebounding situation). The defensive team will resume play with a check ball situation.

Game Provisions
The game will be played in 7-minute halves, with a 2-minute interval at half time.
The clock does not stop.
There is no provision for timeouts.
Substitutions are permitted whenever there’s a check ball situation.
All games must commence and be completed with a minimum of 2 players.
1 point per minute or part thereof will be awarded to the opposition team for late starts, until half time at which a forfeit will be declared.
Each player is allowed 2 fouls per game, with the 3rd foul resulting in that player being fouled out of the game.
Any player disqualified (this does not apply to players who foul out) from a game may not take any further part in the tournament.
Lowered rings will be used for Under 9s, under 10s and where mutually agreed between teams and the HBA.
