Another round of Big V completed, and some mixed results, starting off with the fantastic efforts of the Championship Men to overcome Waverley.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEN – Corio Bay 100 defeated Hawthorn 88 & Bulleen 96 defeated Hawthorn 61
Hawthorn faced their biggest test yet down at Corio Bay and looked competitive throughout, falling 88-100 in a game that will no doubt continue to help their development and prospects under new coach Marcus Timmons. The Stingrays dominated the boards (57-34) and grabbed the win behind the likes of Casey Walker (33pts, 5 treys), Ma’Alo Hicks (20pts, 14rbs) and Jason Reardon (14pts, 15rbs, 9ast, 4 treys). For the impressive Magic, the rise of Ben Waldren (26pts, 9rbs) continues to highlight the good form of a team that nobody expected to up in the top half.
YOUTH LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN – Hawthorn 88 defeated Waverley 79
A strong performance from the Magic boys, winning the final quarter 28 – 19 to take out a 9 point victory. Jack Barry (21 points 5 steals) and Paddy McBrearty (16 points 4 steals) lead the Magic to victory even though Tim Liesting’s 21 points in 19 minutes off the bench needs to be highlighted as a great individual display.
YOUTH LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN – Melbourne 66 defeated Hawthorn 51
The Tigers displayed their defensive intensity against the Magic as they forced the home side into 25 turnovers en-route to a comfortable 15 point victory. Skye Beaton with 18 points deserves an honorable mention for her performance.
