Big V Round 2 Wrap Up

Big V continued this weekend which started with a great double victory for the Men’s teams at BSC in front of a home crowd.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN
Hawthorn grabbed another win on Saturday night to start the season in confidence, the Magic taking less shots but shooting straighter to beat Melbourne. Ben Waldren and Jarrod O’Shannessy both dropped 17pts each for the winners, while for the Tigers John Wilkinson (16pts) and Jakob Cornelissen kept the scoreboard ticking over. A great win for the Magic, 78 – 70.

The team’s confidence was brought straight back to Earth on Sunday against the strong outfit of the Ringwood Hawks. Hawthorn didn’t get a look in at The Rings. The Hawks charged out of the blocks, racing to a 58-31 lead at the half, before coasting to the line. Import Tate Unruh (40pts, 9 treys) put on a shooting clinic and Matt Fennell (14pts, 14rbs) completed a great weekend with another double-double. On a ‘back-to-earth-with-a-thud’ afternoon, the Magic didn’t really have too much to celebrate, the 41pt loss sending them back to the drawing board this week, the final score being 102 – 61.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN
A 23-7 opening period has seen Camberwell race out of the blocks on their way to a comfortable 87-55 win over rivals Hawthorn. In only 20 minutes playing time Rachael Wansbrough carried on her excellent form from round 1 with 24 points and 10 boards in a commanding performance. Sarah Millar nailed 3 triples on her way to 19 for the Dragons with Holly Greene against excellent distributing the ball with 8 assists. For the visiting Magic it was Tash Ross-Harris with 13 points and Steph Perch with 12 that led the scoring. 87 – 55 was the score at full-time.

YOUTH LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN

Hawthorn scored their first win of the season in the round opener against the Spectres. Needing at extra period to take the points, the Magic were too good in OT as Jack Barry (25 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists) and Paddy McBrearty (20 points) kept the scoreboard ticking. The final score being 83 – 78 after overtime.

YOUTH LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN

Ballarat did the damage on Hawthorn in their opening games of the round, as the ‘Rat put a ceiling on their ring in the second half, allowing just 16 points. Eliza Roughead the difference, collecting 18 boards to go with her 11 points. The Magic going down 55 – 39.
