All divisions of Big V returned on the weekend for the 2015 season. Magic had mixed results over the opening round.
The most exciting result coming from the Championship Men’s team as they possibly caused the upset of the round, coming from behind to topple Hume City in a ripper of a contest. Ben Waldren (24pts) proved to be the difference between the two teams with the Magic showing plenty of run. For the Broncos, Jamal Brown delivered 18pts and 21rbs.
The Division 1 Women went up against the Geelong Supercats, who are amongst the favourites in the D1W competition this year. This first clash at Magic’s home showed exactly why. Geelong raced out of the blocks pushing out to a 32-14 quarter time lead and from there continued to push the margin further out in every quarter on their way to a commanding 86-46 win over Hawthorn. It was a great team effort from the Supercats with Jess Watson shooting 9/16 from the field to lead the way with 21 points. For the Magic the only player to hit double points was Nicole Swan with 15.
The Youth League Men faced a determined Sandringham Sabres outfit. The Sabres took the points in the closest game of the round as Matt Burke took off with another 27 point outing. In Sandy’s six point victory. Hawthorn’s Jack Barry (18 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists) was commendable in the loss, despite fouling out late.
Our Youth League Women achieved a great result against the Eltham Wildcats, as they went on to win by 17 points. Kim Rennie was able to clean up all of the ‘Cats’ misses chalking up 18 rebounds, while allowing Jess Atta 15 points and seven boards.
