Basketball Hawthorn launch Academy initiative

Basketball Hawthorn is pleased to launch the Magic Academy.

The initiative has been created following strong interest from the membership for an advanced skills acquisition program after the completion of the recent Hawthorn Junior Magic Representative Program try-outs which saw record numbers in attendance.

The Academy is designed to provide an opportunity for athletes currently not involved in the Junior Magic Program to develop their skills in a safe, competitive and progressive environment. The Academy is targeted specifically for domestic basketball players 10-13yrs of age, who are looking to take the next step in their basketball journey and further hone their fundamentals to enhance future opportunities to progress into representative basketball.

Involvement in the Magic Academy does not guarantee future selection into the Hawthorn Junior Magic Program. However, it will aid in the players overall development.

The Academy takes a two phase development approach in order to build the skill foundations before exploring key game fundamentals and decision making. Phase 1 focuses on skill development and advanced skills acquisition, while Phase 2 enhances the skill development experience by focusing on structured game activities to develop game IQ and decision making.

The Academy  will run on Sunday afternoons at Boroondara Sports Complex during Term 4 and Term 1 (next year), commencing on 17 November and going for 12 weeks.

Basketball Hawthorn, General Manager, Brock Rogers is thrilled to be able to provide an alternative opportunity for athletes looking to develop their skills and continue on their basketball journey outside of the Junior Magic Program.

“This year we had around 700 athletes attend the representative try-outs for only 420 available positions, meaning we had to say no to around 280 aspiring athletes”.

“It was clear that we needed to created a program to cater for those athletes that were unfortunate enough to miss out on selection but still wished to continue their basketball journey above domestic competition, and the new Academy initiative provides that opportunity”, said Rogers.

The Academy will be led by current Magic coaches, who will work along side a number of key development coaches to provide the best environment possible for the athletes.

“The Academy will also provide a great opportunity to develop coaches who are looking to start their journey into the representative and pathway systems”, said Rogers.
